MENTAL RETARDATION
[From Page 44 of Book by name Clinical Evaluation of Certain Ayurvedic Formulations in the Management of Mental Retardation in Ayurvedam Called “MAANSA MANDATA”]

1. CENTELLA ASIATICA (681) (MANDOOKA PARNI – SANSKRIT) Whole plant dried in shade powdered and administered in the dose of 500 mg tablets two times daily for 6 months to 12 months. The dose may be increased to 1 Gram thrice a day for age groups 5 - 16 years.

3. SHANKAPUSHPI (CONVOLULUS PROSTRATA)
   
   
4. VACA (ACORUS CALAMUS)
   
   Alternatively:
   
   Take BAGOPA (Whole Plant – 1000 mg Shaded Rid (Whole Plant) Convolulus Prostata – 380 mg (Whole Plant)
   ACORUS CALAMUS – 20 mg (Rhizome)
   
   Make into powder form after drying in shade, dosage 1400 mg in two divided doses can be given for 1 year.
   
   It is indiased in Mental retardation manifesting as Mental Retardation, delayed mile stones, speech disorders, Hyperactivity and mental development and behaviour not proportionate with chronological age as per the conditions laid down in book called Diagnosis and Statistical manual of (Mental Disorders – Vol. III)
   
   The above drugs must not be used if patient has the following illness.
   1. Uncontrolled Epilepsy, Hyper Kinesis, Psychosis, Organic Brain diseases, Amino Academia and other in born errors of Metabolism, Encephalitis, etc.
   2. Patients with severe systemic disorders.
   3. Patients exposed to Neurotoxin drugs in Utero.
   4. Patients with mental impairment other than mental retardation.
   5. Patients in whom other investigational drug used 3 months prior to entry in this study.
   6. Patients parents who do not give informed consent
   7. Patients with HIV I, II Positive
   8. Patients with Cancer
   9. Patients who received Lymphoid or any other irradiation.
   10. History of Major TRAUMATIC INJURY OR MALIGNANY.
   11. Patients with usage of CORTICO STEROIDES within 4 weeks prior to study.
